- Marigolds contain numerous antioxidant carotenoids that give the petals their bright orange and yellow colors. One of these is Lutein. Lutien is used to support healthy eyes and keep them performing at their best. Antioxidants such as Lutein protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

FAQs
Bilberry FAQs
Did you know that WWII pilots ate bilberries to improve their night sight? Berries have always been part of nature’s nutrition bounty; attractive in colour, taste and aromas. Bilberries are small berries native to Northern Europe. They are also known as European blueberries, black whortles, Swedish bilberry, whortleberries, and other names depending on where they grow. Here in New Zealand, the common name is bilberry and it is commonly available in powder form.
What is bilberry powder?
This is ripe dried bilberry fruit that has been crushed in powder form.
Why take bilberry supplements?
Bilberries are rich in flavonoids, natural chemical compounds found in plants. These compounds have positive effects on bodily functions such as circulation, metabolism, and control of blood sugar. Bilberries have been attributed to positive benefits among them;
- Dense nutrition – Berries are superfoods, with concentrated nutrients in small servings. Bilberries contain Vitamins C and K, manganese, and fructose. A cup of blueberries will yield 80 calories from 15 grams of natural sugar, and provide 4 grams of fibre.
- Improved vision – Studies have shown that people who take bilberry supplements are less susceptible to eye fatigue when working with bright screens e.g. computer monitors. They are also at a lower risk of developing glaucoma. A daily dosage of 120 mg was seen to improve night vision by about 30%
- Controlling blood sugar – The anthocyanin in bilberries is believed to stimulate the production of insulin, which is essential in moving blood sugar into muscle cells for energy. This, in turn, lowers the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke
- Improved digestion – The fibre in bilberries helps move food along the digestive tract
Are there any side effects of bilberry supplements?
There have been no known side effects of taking bilberry supplements, but high dosages for a long time are discouraged.
How much bilberry can I take daily?
Nutrition experts recommend a daily intake of 120-175 mg depending on factors such as age and any preexisting conditions e.g. type 2 diabetes
Is bilberry good for the eyes?
Scientific studies have shown that lowered blood sugar, in turn, lowers the risk of developing glaucoma, which is a condition commonly seen in people with type 2 diabetes. Bilberry intake also improves natural moisturisation of the eyes, which reduces eye strain and fatigue.
