It’s that time of the year when the school year begins!
Only a few days to go till the school year begins! Can you believe how quickly the holidays have gone by? Time to start thinking about all the school books etc. But don’t forget to consider the important supplements to help boost kid’s energy so we don’t get too many complaints and tantrums at home eh?! Here is a list of my favourite supplements and why.
Omega 3 Fish Oil: Omega 3 is an important nutrient for brain health and development but also really important for eye health. So this is one that I keep at home and use a lot with my kids. Consider a fish oil that is high in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) the key nutrient for brain health but also has a good balance of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Omega 3 will help support brain function helping with attention so is also a go to for kids who find it hard to stay focused in the classroom. We just don’t get enough in our daily diet and the body cannot make this nutrient so supplementation is strongly recommended.
We have a good range of different brands available as well as liquid fish oil. My favourite is Ethical Nutrients liquid fish oil and the kids really love it too. They each have a shot glass and I add a bit of juice (I think it’s this part the love the most as they never get it otherwise!) daily before bed with their probiotic
More Greens & Nutrients
Nuzest Good Green Stuff: A powdered supplement that is LOADED with nutrients. This is one that I add to our daily breakfast smoothie. But you can just add to water and drink, the flavour is definitely one of the more pleasant ones on the market! It’s a great way to get the extra amount of greens and nutrients into their diet, particularly if you child is a fussy eater. I also strongly recommend this one for those really active teenagers who not only have to worry about school work but also their chose sport(s). I can’t tell you the amount of awesome feedback we get on this product both for me in clinic but also in the store.
For those kids younger than 5 there is also the Nuzest Kids Good Green stuff which is chocolate mint flavoured and perfect to make into yummy desserts
For those really active kids you may want to consider a protein powder. Particularly beneficial if they are really on the go a lot between school and after school sports a protein drink will help muscle recovery and help to make them feel fuller for longer. We have the KNH Whey protein which is very low carb and not loaded with unnecessary fillers, sugars etc.
For those who have a dairy intolerance we also have the Nuzest Clean Lean Protein and BSC Daily Protein, both of which are SUPER yummy.
Kid’s Feeling Stressed?
Do your kids get stressed at school? Have anxiety? Some kids just get a wee bit worked up when it comes to school work and school life. I know, because one of mine has a tendency to be like this. Lots of cuddles for the wee young ones is a must of course and lots of words of encouragement and support. But I have also found the Kiwiherb Kids Calm to work really well. In conjunction with the Artemis Rest and Relax Tea which is perfectly safe for kids (even babies!) to just help relax those nerves a bit.
Im also a huge fan of breathing techniques so even at the age of 7 I get my wee boy to sit with me and just breathe deeply. It takes him a while to get onto my page but once we are there together it certainly makes a difference for the rest of the afternoon/evening to go a little smoother.
Another awesome one more suited for the teenagers would be the KNH Stress Less. This is an awesome supplement for anyone who is under constant stress be it work or school to help dampen down the feelings of stress. This is a herbal complex only and is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine formula and is my number one favourite from the shop.
We also have a great range of kid’s immune boosting supplements as well as probiotics. Great to have on hand just in case they do pick up the school yard bugs that randomly do the rounds. There are also B complexes and Zinc complexes that would be perfect for the older teenagers as well as skin care products for teenage skin.
Good luck to you fellow parents for the start of the new school year!
