The summer season is upon us!

For most of us, that means backyard BBQ’s, drinking a little more, eating a little more, and slacking off on our usual exercise routine.

Supplementation is Key

While it’s not the be-all and end-all, supplementation can be the small change you make to your routine which can affect the biggest change to your body. There’s a number of supplements out there that purport to help with weight loss, but it’s important to remember that supplements are meant to be supplementary to a healthy and balanced lifestyle!

Move Your body

Now, remembering that supplements are a small part of the puzzle… the next step is to get moving!

You could invest in a months’ worth of personal training or fork out hundreds of dollars on a gym membership – but who’s really got the money for all of that.

Keep it simple!

Start by setting yourself a goal.

Goals are great because they’re a reminder of what you’re working towards. We all have those days where we just can’t be bothered, and our goals stand as a reminder to ourselves that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That all of the hard-yards will be worth it in the end.

Once you have your goal set – start immediately. The more we put off our goals, the less likely they are to become a reality.

Remember that creating change in your body is as simple as “Energy in vs. Energy out”. So, if you’re new to this – and you’re not currently exercising – start with a few walks around the block and slowly build to a jog.

Do this 2-3 times a week, and already you’re burning more calories than you were last week!

Eat Right and Eat Well

This seems to be the thing that people find that hardest, when embarking on a weight loss journey.

When you think about it, eating is something that most of us do at least three times a day – every day. So, it’s understandable that our eating habits are some of the hardest to break away from.

Here’s three simple hacks from Ben at Real Training Co. which are a sure-fire way to help you stay on track:

1. Before You do Anything Else, Put it Away!

When food is out of sight, it’s out of mind.

If there’s food left over from cooking, put it in the fridge straight away – you’ll be less likely to pick.

I grew up in a family where we ate well. We weren’t unhealthy, we weren’t health-nut’s or anything either, don’t get me wrong, but there was always plenty to eat… and I mean plenty!

So, snacking after dinner was always a bad habit of mine.

When you’ve finished cooking. As soon as you’ve finished. Before you do anything else, before you even sit down to eat your dinner, tidy the kitchen and put any extra food away!

2. Brush Your Teeth

If you still think you might eat something after your meal, brush your teeth as soon as you’re done. This is a great trick for anyone who eats because they love the taste of food!

Toothpaste is a really great way to ruin the taste of most things we like to eat. So, as quickly as you’ve finished your dinner, you should go and brush your teeth – don’t wait until bedtime.

3. Eat Well During The Day

Remember back at the beginning when I said I’d get home and I’d probably be hungry?

Most of the time it’s because I wasn’t eating properly throughout the day. If you want a long “sciencey” spiel about calorie timing and your metabolism click here, but if you want the simple truth, here goes:

One of the largest contributors to obesity is portion control – and I put a lot of this down to only eating when you’re hungry.

You know how they say you should never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Well, the same could be said for eating; you should never eat on an empty stomach.

When you eat well during the day, you won’t come home wanting to snack on an empty stomach.

Well, there you have it! Three simple tips from my experience as a sneaky nighttime snacker!

Remember, this list isn’t exhaustive and there’s undoubtedly a multitude of other ways to curb your snacking habits. Just remember to take your time. Be kind to yourself and, most importantly, be patient!
