about us

Our building

In 1988 Rob Haines founded New Zealand Health Food Company. Its incorporation was from a desire to take indigenous New Zealand natural products to the world.

“Established national and international brands asked me to supply them with quality ingredients for their own production. As some of these ingredients grew in popularity, and spurred on by my customers success, I developed our own retail brands; ‘NZHF’ and ‘Kiwi Natural Health’ in the mid 1990’s”.

Export markets were established by this time and continue to grow each year as the worlds demand for natural ingredients increases.

In 2008 the ‘KNH’ and Dr Bee ranges were launched. These were developed using the best formulation science available, and the most up-to-date knowledge and resources.  Since then, this range has continued to expand as new ingredients developed.

New Zealand Health Food Company is an active participant and supporter of the NZ Natural products industry. We are a current UMF license holder (http://www.umf.org.nz/), necessary to provide 100% pure certified UMF manuka honey. We are also a board member of the Canterbury Nelson Nutraceuticals Cluster and a member of Natural Products New Zealand (http://www.naturalproductsnz.org).

We look excitedly to the future as new natural products are discovered and developed into products that change people lives.

New Zealand Health Food Company is committed to providing high quality products, effective product development and outstanding customer service. We do this to help you live better naturally.

We operate a quality management system (QMS) to ensure that we deliver products that are of a consistent high quality. Our QMS is accredited to New Zealand Food Safety Authority standards. This allows our customers the reassurance that our products are produced using the best cGMP guidelines and principles.

New Zealand Health Food Company has had a commitment to producing quality products since 1988. As part of this commitment, a government registered and approved Risk Management Programme (RMP) is in place. This approval assures that all products manufactured under it are produced to certified HACCP guidelines.

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a world standard risk management system and incorporates a systematic approach to managing chemical, physical and biological hazards in the manufacturing process.

New Zealand Health Food Company closely manages product manufacture; from initial development to sale, ensuring that only products that reach its high standard are sold.

Since its inception, New Zealand Health Food Company has been a “family business”.

Robs mother Joan has played an active part in the business both as mentor and in operations, and she has only just retired recently at the age of 82. Robs daughter Ellie is also part of the team, learning all the aspects of the company, and continuing what we hope is a long family tradition. The involvement of all three generations, as well as the support of Rob’s wife Lynda, has created a warm, supportive and very unique work environment.

It is this environment that has ensured staff retention, loyalty and the creation of our own “NZHF family”. Our small but effective team work together to deliver a high level of customer service and supply from the ground floor up. From our factory and logistics team right through to our retail staff, every member of our “NZHF family” works hard to ensure that we give the very best level of service to our customers.

Health and Safety

New Zealand Health Food Company recognises the importance of health and safety.

The company’s health and safety policy sets out our commitment and outlines our approach to effective health and safety management. Our processes and procedures are designed not simply to meet legal requirements but to effectively deliver a healthy, safe and secure working environment for our employees and everyone else who might be affected by our work.

Working with us

We recognise large the contribution our employees have made to our success and that they have helped us get to where we are today. We recruit skilled and passionate staff who share our values and vision, and we are committed to creating a work environment that is enjoyable, flexible and practical. We offer our employees fair terms and conditions, ensuring they have the skills and qualifications they need, and providing opportunities for training and development. We work hard to ensure that our staff are happy and contented both in their professional and private development. This in turn has rewarded us with unusually high levels of staff retention and an impressive average length of service of over 8 years.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility

New Zealand Health Food Company understands the importance of sustainability - in design, delivery and in continuing operation. For example, this is reflected in how we:

  • Source sustainable materials and look for ethical suppliers
  • Work with the local community where appropriate
  • Manufacture products energy-efficiently while minimising waste during production
  • Source recyclable packaging for our own brands and encourage our suppliers to do the same

We work hard across all aspects of the business, from production to administration, to reduce packaging waste and recycle where possible.
